Building community, one Scrabble tile at a time
Salmon Arm campus Library staff Taryn, Catie and Shayla are always looking for fun ways to connect students, employees and community members.
Their most recent endeavour is a daily Scrabble competition where anyone on campus is welcome to choose seven tiles and play the best word they can on the current board. Players can only play once per day. They record their score for their word that day to be in the running for a prize given to the player with the highest scoring word over the course of the whole game (until the tiles run out, which is usually one week). The game then resets, and the fun begins all over.
The game has been a big hit with folks chatting about their word over lunch hour or in the halls and of course a little friendly competition. It goes to show that sometimes a nice wholesome throwback to a familiar game is all you need to spark a sense of community.
On top of interactive ideas like this, the Library is a hub for various topical displays, treats around different holidays and events like the Stress Less Fair and Long Night Against Procrastination. Learn to Crochet classes are starting in March, too. Last but certainly not least the Library is home to Burly, our therapy dog, who is on call to bring some cheer and calm to anyone that needs it.
