Is counselling confidential?
Students often wonder what will happen with the information that they share in counselling sessions. Confidentiality is a cornerstone of the counselling profession and OC counsellors are bound by ethical and professional standards in this area.
Important notes:
- Participation in counselling, or any information that is shared in counselling, will not appear on a student’s academic record.
- Participation in counselling or any information that is shared in counselling, will not be shared without a student’s written permission to do so.
- If a parent, instructor or OC staff member inquire as to whether a student is connected with counselling, counsellors will not confirm or deny any information without the student’s permission.
- There are a few limits to confidentiality within a counselling relationship that pertain to the safety of self, others, and the OC community. These will be reviewed at the beginning of a student’s first session with a counsellor.
