Frequently asked questions
Do you offer drop-in appointments?
Due to high demand, all counselling appointments are pre-scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis. Students are generally seen within two to three weeks of their initial request.
How long does it take to get in to see a counsellor?
Wait times vary throughout the semester. During busy periods, it may take up to three weeks to see a counsellor for a regular appointment.
How many sessions do I get? How often can I attend?
Students can access up to 10 individual counselling sessions during their time at OC. You and your counsellor will discuss the frequency of sessions based on your needs and counsellor availability.
What if I am unable to make my scheduled appointment?
Please provide at least 24 hours' notice if you need to cancel your appointment by contacting your counsellor directly via email. If you are more than 10 minutes late, it will be considered a missed appointment, and you'll need to reschedule your appointment.
Can a counsellor provide me with a note for my instructor or sign my withdrawal form?
Counsellors do not typically contact instructors and are unable to sign a Request for Medical and Compassionate Withdrawal unless in exceptional circumstances.
My instructor referred me to counselling; am I required to attend?
Engaging in counselling is voluntary. Students have the right to refuse counselling at any time.
Should I see a Counsellor or Educational Advisor?
See a counsellor for personal, mental health, career, or academic challenges. For questions about programs, courses, admission requirements, or prerequisites, consult an Educational Advisor.
Can I still talk to a counsellor even though I am not currently taking classes at OC?
Counselling services are for currently enrolled and attending OC students only. If you are not attending OC and would like to access counselling support, please visit the Counselling Resources for Students page for a list of available community resources.
