Donate plasma and give the best gift ever this holiday season

Canadian Blood Services is looking for plasma donors
Canadian Blood Services are looking for plasma donations

Did you know that in Canada, the need for blood plasma is four times greater than what we currently collect? What if you could save a life in 90 minutes? What better gift could there be this holiday season?

On Wednesday, Dec. 1, OC community members are invited to kickoff the season by giving the best gift ever. Join your colleagues in donating plasma as OC ‘adopts’ the Canadian Blood Services (CBS) plasma donation centre at Orchard Park mall, 2271 Harvey Ave, Kelowna, for the afternoon. Appointments will be blocked for OC starting at 1 p.m. every five minutes. To sign up or ask a question, contact Angelika March. All you need to bring with you to the appointment is a piece of ID. Check out the attached guide for how to join the Okanagan College “Team” online (using our partner ID#: OKAN002612), so your donations can be tracked toward OC’s total.

What is blood plasma? Why donate? This pale liquid is just as vital to saving lives as the red cells. Blood plasma can be transfused directly to patients with liver failure, severe infections or serious burns. But where demand for blood plasma is really soaring, in Canada and around the world, is in the manufacture of specialized products for immune deficiencies, bleeding disorders, devastating autoimmune diseases and more. Read more and watch a video about this lifesaving gift on the CBS website.

Can’t make it on Dec. 1? Stop by another time

The CBS Plasma Donation Centre at Orchard Park is open Monday and Saturday 8 a.m. – 2 p.m., and Tuesday through Friday 7 a.m. – 7:30 p.m.
