Assessments & proficiency tests

At Okanagan College, we offer various assessments and tests designed to help you understand your current abilities and prepare for success in your academic journey.

Skills Assessments for Adult Upgrading

After you have applied and been accepted to the Adult Upgrading program, you will have access to our optional Math and English skills assessments, which are called MATH 001P and ENGL 001P.

These assessments are available online through Moodle and can be completed at any time. They are designed to help you determine which Math and/or English courses you should register for.

If the assessments are not already visible in your Moodle account, you may need to register for them online through myOkanagan, just as you would for any other course. Please visit How to Register and scroll down to “A Video Guide on How to Register” for instructions.

Trades entrance assessment (TEA)

If you have not met the Math and/or English admission requirements for a Trades Foundation program within the allowable timeframe, you may complete the Trades Entrance Assessment as an alternative way to meet the admission requirements.

You must apply for a Trades Foundation program and receive a response from admissions before you can register for this assessment.

For more information about the TEA, please visit Trades Entrance Assessment (TEA).

Program entrance assessments

Math proficiency testing

A Math Proficiency Test may be completed to satisfy the math admission requirement for a number of programs. Please navigate to Testing Centre > Math Proficiency Test Information to learn more.

Typing test

The Testing Centre offers typing tests for members of the community who are required to provide typing results for employment purposes. We also accommodate external students taking typing tests for admission into programs at other post-secondary institutions.

Typing tests can be completed online from home with an internet connection and a webcam. They are also available in person at the Salmon Arm, Vernon, and Penticton campuses.

To book a typing test, please visit Testing Centre.

Okanagan College’s in-person English language assessment (OCELA) test

This assessment is for English as a Second Language (ESL) students. New students complete the assessment to determine their placement in listening, speaking, reading, and writing courses. This assessment is normally held on campus prior to the start of classes.

Please visit OCELA to request an assessment.
