On November 8, Okanagan College recognizes Indigenous Veterans Day and honours the service and sacrifices of First Nations, Inuit and Métis veterans. Indigenous Peoples have a long and proud tradition of military service in Canada and have contributed in significant numbers during times of war and peace, often overcoming barriers and inequities to serve their communities and country.
Indigenous Veterans Day was established nationally in 1994 following decades of advocacy to ensure Indigenous veterans received distinct recognition for their contributions. As we approach Remembrance Day, we encourage members of the OC community to take time to learn more about the histories, experiences and ongoing service of Indigenous veterans, including those from communities throughout the Okanagan and Interior region.
