Flags will be lowered in memory of Don Furman, Chemistry Instructor, who passed on March 3.
Don began his career with Okanagan College on May 1, 1970. He worked in the Chemistry department at the Kelowna North campus for 28 years.
“When Don joined the College as a chemistry laboratory instructor in the early ‘70s, Graham Bruce and I were chemistry instructors, and we worked closely with Don with regards to the laboratory segments of the courses. In the early days, the science laboratories (biology, chemistry and physics) were housed in a portable building which presented problems in using sensitive equipment, etc. Don was very good at devising workable solutions. He was very well organized, thorough in the detail of his work, planned ahead, and very reliable,” said Bill Bowering, former OUC President. “He was very attentive to student needs, accommodating where possible, and quickly gained their respect and gratitude. It was a pleasure to be associated with him in all respects.”
Don enjoyed exploring the mountains, fishing and traveling and was an accomplished painter, scientist and teacher. Don’s sons, Joe, Keith, Neil and Scott, all attended Okanagan College as well as many of his grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the KGH Foundation are encouraged. An open house Celebration of Life will be held from 1 to 4 p.m., Saturday, March 19, at 3044 Riesling Pl., West Kelowna. For more information call 250-859-0863. Condolences to the family can be made online.
