ASE students

OC instructor Kyla Ashman has been teaching her Adult Special Education (ASE) class in-person at the Kelowna campus since September and has left no stone unturned to keep the learning curriculum fun during the pandemic.

“In ASE this year we have been studying topics such as self-awareness, self-esteem, communication, values, goal setting, attitudes and so much more,” explains Ashman. “Students have been attending classes in accordance with strict COVID safety protocols and we needed a break, we needed to do something fun.”

Students could choose from several creative projects including one that is making an inspiring impact. Students were challenged to paint rocks sharing one of their personal values or a motivational word and then hid them around the exterior of the Kelowna campus. The project allowed students to self-reflect on their core values and share words of hope and joy to campus-goers who were lucky enough to find the hidden rocks.

“The ASE class put a lot of thought into the messages and we hope these rocks bring a smile to your face if you happen to see them,” adds Ashman.

Adult Special Education programs at Okanagan College provide the support students need to reach their full potential. Programs are part of a life progression – integrated where possible – teaching independence and encouraging interest in a lifetime of learning and working within the community.
