Okanagan College extends condolences on the passing of Joan Phillip, respected Indigenous leader and MLA
Okanagan College extends its deepest condolences to Grand Chief Stewart Phillip, his family and the wider community on the passing of his wife, Joan Phillip, also known as Amshen.
A member of the Snpink'tn (Penticton Indian Band), Joan was the daughter of Tsleil-Waututh Elder Bob George, granddaughter of Chief Dan George, and sister to Lee Maracle. She is survived by her five children, fifteen grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
From her early life in North Vancouver, to her studies at Okanagan College and her decades of service to the Penticton Indian Band and Indigenous communities, Joan dedicated her life to strengthening communities and creating opportunities for others. Her leadership and advocacy reflected her belief in the power of education to bring hope and strengthen future generations, values that deeply resonate with the OC community.
As many gather this week to remember Joan, we are thinking of Grand Chief Phillip, his family, and all those who knew her. With much gratitude, we honour Joan’s life and the lasting contribution she made to her community and to future generations.
