Ajitesh Parihar, Bachelor of Computer Information Systems

Ajitesh Parihar

Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

My name is Ajitesh, and I’ve been interested in computers from a young age, originally through video games. That interest quickly grew into curiosity about how computers work and eventually into programming and technology. Outside of tech, I enjoy learning languages and meeting people from different backgrounds. I moved to Kelowna three years ago to pursue the BCIS program at Okanagan College.

How did you learn about the different programs offered at OC?

I was looking for a Canadian institution that would provide a quality education while also allowing me to transfer credits I had already completed. I learned about the different programs offered at Okanagan College through the website and explored which program best aligned with my interests and career goals.

What drew you to the BCIS program at Okanagan College specifically – and what were you hoping it would lead to?

I was drawn to the variety of courses offered in the BCIS program because they aligned with the skills and areas I wanted to learn. I hoped to build a strong foundation in programming, modern technologies, and real-world problem solving through hands-on projects.

What does a typical week look like for you in the program — what are you are actually doing,  building, or solving?

One thing I really liked about the program was the balance between theory and hands-on work. A typical week involved not just assignments, but practical projects in areas such as database management, networking, containerization with Docker, and machine learning. It felt very applied rather than purely academic.

Has anything in the program surprised you — something you didn't expect to be doing or learning?

Before starting the program, I didn’t expect to have the opportunity to work on research. In my third year, I started working as a research assistant, which opened many new opportunities for me. It allowed me to develop new skills, contribute to applied research projects, and publish and present papers at conferences.

Tell us about a project, assignment, or moment where something clicked — where you felt like you were doing real work, not just studying.

Rather than one specific moment, there were several experiences where I felt I was doing real work. Competing in the final programming evaluation for algorithms, designing efficient database systems, and collaborating with clients during the capstone project all felt meaningful and practical rather than just coursework.

How have your instructors shaped your experience? Is there a specific example that stands out?

The instructors were one of the best parts of my experience at OC. They were approachable, supportive, and often shared real-world industry and research experience. One thing that stood out to me was how willing they were to mentor students outside the classroom, whether through research opportunities, career advice, or extra help on difficult topics.

If you're doing a co-op work term or any Work Integrated Learning (WIL) — how has the program prepared you for it, or what are you hoping to get from it?

During my studies at OC, I had the opportunity to work as a research intern at Université Paris-Est Créteil in France. The research methodology directed studies course that I took during my fourth year and the experience working as a research assistant helped prepare me for this role and enabled me to contribute to a software project aimed at supporting visually impaired learners in higher education.

Who else do you think would thrive in this program — what kind of person is the BCIS degree a good fit for?

People who are curious about technology, enjoy problem-solving, and work well with others would thrive in this program. Beyond technical skills, the BCIS program emphasizes teamwork, communication, and understanding real-world business requirements.

Where do you see yourself in five years, and how does what you're learning connect to that?

In five years, I see myself pursuing graduate studies, ideally working toward a master’s degree and eventually doctoral research. My time at OC helped me build both technical skills and a research-oriented mindset that I believe will support my future academic goals.

If you could say one thing to someone who's on the fence about applying — what would it be?

If you’re passionate about technology and willing to put in the effort, I would definitely encourage you to apply. The program gives you a strong foundation, but your experience can become even more rewarding if you go beyond the classroom through student activities, research, or personal projects.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with future OC students about your journey

Studying at OC has been a pivotal part of my journey. I’m grateful for the support I received from instructors, faculty, classmates, and the broader college community. All the opportunities that I got here helped shape both my academic and personal growth.
