A message from Health, Safety and Emergency Management Services

Facilities Management workers do their best to clear snow and ice as quickly as possible in as many places at once. However, depending on conditions you may still encounter slippery areas on campus.

Report snow-covered or icy sidewalks

  • At any Okanagan College campus, centre, or leased property (including the Evangel Church parking lot): contact Facilities Maintenance by calling 250-762-5445 x4262 or submitting a Facilities Work Request.
  • Outside of campus: Snow removal or maintenance issues on municipal property between the Evangel Church and the Kelowna campus can be reported using the City of Kelowna's Service Request Portal. For concerns at other off-campus locations, please contact your local municipality.

Winter walking tips:

  • Walk in designated areas and stay on cleared sidewalks
  • Take small steps to keep your center of balance under you
  • Point your feet slightly outward and keep your arms free for balance
  • Use handrails where available
  • Watch where you're stepping and avoid carrying loads with your arms
  • Test potentially slippery spots by tapping your foot on them
  • Step carefully from vehicles or equipment – never jump
  • Wear winter footwear with enhanced traction – don't wear high heels outdoors
  • Walk slowly and allow yourself additional time to get where you're going
  • Don't text and walk at the same time

If you see someone fall:

  • Check if the person is okay
  • Contact Campus Security to summon first aid and report injuries as required
  • Report the slippery area to Facilities by calling 250-762-5445 x4262 or submitting a Facilities Work Request
