If you're thinking about switching up assessments in your classes, check out these suggestions from Learning and Applied Research.

Pecha Kucha (Japanese for chit-chat)

Description: A story-telling format in which the presenter shows 20 slides with 20 seconds of   commentary each. Slides typically use striking visuals related to the topic.

  • Benefits: This activity encourages learners to focus on the most essential elements in their presentations while fostering creativity and choice.
  • When this might be useful: This strategy works well for class presentations either in face-to-face or synchronous online classes. PechaKuchas can also be prerecorded in PowerPoint or Kaltura and then shared in Moodle forums.

ChatGPT critique

Description: In this activity, learners have Chat GPT write a response to a particular discipline specific prompt. Students are then asked to critique the response by applying specific criteria such as the depth of the response, its validity, potential biases, argumentation, and source reliability.

  • Benefits: Learners will become more familiar with the potential applications of Chat GPT while applying a critical analysis to the content it produces.
  • When this might be useful: This activity could be applied across disciplines on topics that learners already have foundational or advanced knowledge.
