Brianne Niznikowski (Adult Literacy Instructor) and Wanda Dudley (VLTP Assistant) hosted a Meet and Mingle event in November for the volunteer tutors in the Volunteer Literacy Tutor Program (VLTP) at the Penticton Campus of Okanagan College. Alison Gibson, Regional Dean, South Okanagan-Similkameen also attended. This was an opportunity for Alison, Brianne and Wanda to express their gratitude to the volunteers and thank them for their valuable work tutoring adult literacy learners at Okanagan College and in the Penticton and Summerland communities. Our tutors truly make a difference in the lives of their students.

Tutoring one-to-one can be an isolating activity and the Meet and Mingle event gave the volunteers opportunities to meet each other, share experiences, and chat about the program with other volunteers, as well as with Brianne, Wanda and Alison. Eighteen tutors attended the Meet and Mingle, and they were treated to refreshments prepared by the Penticton campus’ Marmalade Cat Café. Ten new volunteers recently completed tutor training sessions with Brianne, and they are ready and eager to be paired with a student!

Volunteer Literacy Tutor Programs are available at the Penticton, Kelowna, and Vernon campuses and a similar program, the Community Adult Literacy Program (CALP) is offered in Oliver and Osoyoos, Salmon Arm and Revelstoke.
