With over 1.7 billion Muslims in the world, Canada is home to over 1,000,000 individuals identifying as Muslim.

One of the five pillars of Islam is to observe the holy month of Ramadan, which is March 22 to April 20 in 2023. During this period, Muslims observe fasting, prayer, reflection and community. The morning meal is taken before sunrise and each evening, the fast is broken with an evening celebratory dinner (iftar).

During Ramadan, you may notice students or colleagues observing the traditions may be tired, thirsty, withdrawn, have difficulty concentrating or they may simply be exhausted.  Please be respectful and offer understanding and support for those in observance.

At the end of the month of Ramadan, there is a celebration period, known as Eid (al-Fitr), which lasts three days.
