When Omar Algiasena enrolled in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) studies through InspirED Continuing Studies and Corporate Training at Okanagan College, he was looking to take his interest in digital mapping and turn it into a career. He did just that, demonstrating how education can open doors and why programs like the StrongerBC future skills grant matter for learners looking to build skills, advance their careers or transition into growing industries. 

The Province of B.C.’s StrongerBC future skills grant is helping British Columbians access short-term, career-focused training that can lead to new opportunities and in-demand careers. This year, 25 courses and programs at Okanagan College have been approved for the grant, giving eligible learners financial support to build on their skills and knowledge for career growth. 

Eligible Okanagan College credentials and training options include: 

• GIS Essentials, GIS Database Management, 3D Modeling and Remote Sensing in GIS and Advanced GIS 
• AutoCAD Skills, Project Management 
• IT User Support, Practical Cybersecurity for IT Professionals  
• Landscape Horticulture, Viticulture 
• Dental Office Administrative Assistant, Trauma-Informed Practice 
• Advanced Nursing Footcare, Orthodontic Module, Provisional Prosthodontic Module 
• IP (Interprovincial/Red Seal) Refresher courses in: 
• Autobody and Collision, Automotive Service Technician 
• Construction Electrician 
• Gasfitter A, Gasfitter B 
• Heavy Duty Equipment Technician 
• Refrigeration and AC Mechanic (RACM) 
• Sheet Metal Worker 
• Canada’s Ozone Layer Protection Awareness Program, Facility Operator Course 

Eligible learners can receive up to $3,500 (lifetime amount) toward tuition and fees for approved training. Funding is provided by the Province of British Columbia through the StrongerBC future skills grant.

“At Okanagan College, we focus on creating responsive, relevant training that connects people with the skills needed in today’s workforce,” said Mary Kline, director of OC’s InspirED Continuing Studies and Corporate Training. “We work with industry and community partners to develop programs that address emerging needs while giving learners practical skills to advance, adapt and explore new career opportunities.” 

With campuses in Vernon, Kelowna, Penticton and Salmon Arm, Okanagan College delivers community-based learning. And with online, in-person and blended options, students can learn when and how it works for them.  

Which is exactly how Algiasena made it work for him. 

After balancing his studies with overnight shifts at Walmart in Salmon Arm, Algiasena completed his GIS training at OC. He then pursued his bachelor’s and master’s degrees, going on to build a career with Esri Canada. Today, he is giving back to where it all started — returning to Okanagan College as an instructor in the GIS program where he is helping other learners discover opportunities of their own.  

"Years ago, I was juggling night shifts and family responsibilities while studying GIS at OC. I never imagined that I’d come back as an instructor,” shared Algiasena. “Returning to this program is a full circle moment, and an important and proud moment in my life and GIS journey.” 

“Okanagan College has decades of experience preparing learners to step into careers with success,” said Provost and VP Academic, Dr. Samantha Lenci. “Thanks in part to the StrongerBC future skills grant, more people can take advantage of the kind of career-specific training that really makes a difference in their own lives and in their communities.”
