Hope in action

"I’ve been very fortunate in life. I’ve had opportunities, support, and good health — and I’ve always known I wanted to give back in a meaningful way. But for a long time, I wrestled with a question that’s not always easy to face: What happens to my wealth when I’m gone?

My wife and I don’t have children. With no direct heirs, I began thinking deeply about legacy — about how I could leave the world a little better than I found it. I knew I wanted to help others. I just wasn’t sure how.

When I met with my lawyer to revisit my estate planning, she asked about my passions and suggested I look into supporting Okanagan College. That conversation changed everything.

During my visit to the College, I was blown away by the programs and the students. I was especially drawn to the Practical Nursing program. A few years ago, I underwent two major surgeries at Kelowna General

Hospital. The nurses who cared for me made all the difference. I’ll never forget their compassion, skill, and dedication. That experience left a lasting mark on me.

I realized that supporting future nurses was a way to say thank you — and a way to make sure others receive that same level of care. I had the ability to give now and build a legacy for the future. So, I created two annual $2,500 bursaries for students in the Practical Nursing program, and I included Okanagan College in my estate plans.

This past May, I was on my annual trip with friends when I received a letter from a student I supported. Reading his words brought tears to my eyes. He shared his dreams, his challenges, and how the bursary was helping him achieve a brighter future. It was one of the most moving moments of my life. That letter confirmed everything I hoped my gift could be.

Helping someone I’ve never met take a step toward a successful career, a stable family life, and a future full of possibilities — that’s what giving means to me. It’s a hand up. It’s hope in action.

These days, I find myself talking to friends about how we all have something to give – and someone out there who needs it. And by giving now, I get to witness that impact firsthand. There’s no greater joy."
